World Vasectomy Day: If You Need Convincing, Here are 12 Reasons to Get a Vasectomy

World Vasectomy Day is coming up on November 19. Guys tend to be chronic procrastinators, like remember how you promised to clean out the attic months ago? And weren’t you going to straighten up your desktop and finally go to the doctor too?

So it’s no surprise when it comes to sterilization, guys put off having a vasectomy – or avoid it all together. In fact, most guys will gladly clean out the attic, straighten their desktop, or go for a dreaded checkup instead of getting snipped.

The problem is, guys are often ignored when it comes to family planning. But there’s a movement trying to change that: World Vasectomy Day.

You read that correctly; there is actually a day dedicated to vasectomies. It’s Nov. 19, conveniently nestled between Halloween (so you can put your fears behind you) and Thanksgiving (think how thankful your wife will be!).

The idea is to get men more involved in family planning and encourage them to take one for the team. Not convinced yet? Well, here are 12 reasons to get a vasectomy.

  1. Everybody’s Doing It

Well, not everybody, but a lot of guys. Nearly 500,000 men in the U.S. get snipped each year. You don’t want to miss out on all the fun. It’s a growing fraternity with cool perks like no more diaper changing! Who doesn’t want to be a part of that?

  1. You Don’t Want Any More Kids

Let’s remember the reason why you’ve been considering a vasectomy in the first place—you’re done with kids. Those lovable little ones are as expensive as they are adorable. And your hair wasn’t that grey before you became a dad. Do you really want to risk a surprise pregnancy?

  1. It’s Permanent

If you and you’re wife are sure more kids are out of the question, then a vasectomy is the most effective form of birth control. Condoms and birth control pills are less satisfying, and do you really want to constantly refill her prescription or buy condoms? Didn’t think so.

  1. It’s Safe

While surgery near your family jewels can make you shudder, it’s actually a low-risk procedure with only a few rare side effects. Less than five percent of guys experience infection, bleeding, or pain afterward. Swelling is common, but it goes down after a few days.

  1. It’s Quick

Think you’ll have to go under the knife for hours? Think again. You’ll probably sit in the waiting room longer than it takes to undergo the procedure. It will be over in 25 minutes or less. A vasectomy can be performed at a doctor’s office under local anesthesia. That means no hospitalization, and you won’t be put to sleep.

  1. It’s Inexpensive (and Usually Covered by Insurance)

On average, a vasectomy costs $350-$1,000, and most healthcare insurers cover it. Compare that to the cost of a tubal ligation ($5,000-$8,000) or the average cost of raising a child ($16,000 a year), and you realize it’s the best deal.

  1. You Can be a Couch Potato

Vasectomy recovery is like a guy’s fantasy: you sit on the couch, ice your crotch, and do nothing for about three days. Essentially, you can control the TV, watch sports for three days straight and tell your wife it’s “doctor’s orders.”

  1. You Must Have a Lot of Sex After the Procedure

A week or so after the procedure, you can get back to sex—a lot of sex. Sperm can live in your system for months after the surgery, so doctors need you to have 25-30 ejaculations to clear them out. You’ll need to use another form of birth control during this time, and you’ll need to test your sperm count afterward.

  1. You Can Skip the Doctor and Test Your Sperm at Home

The follow-up sperm test is essential to confirming your sterility, so you can’t avoid it. But you can avoid the awkwardness of supplying a sample at the doctor’s office. You can use SpermCheck, an over-the-counter home test that gives you your sterility status. It’s simple and gives you results in minutes.

  1. Worry-Free Sex

Once the test confirms you’re sterile, you can toss the birth control and have sex without worrying about getting your wife pregnant. No more worrying about whether she took her pill or if your condom broke.

  1. It Doesn’t Hinder Your Sex Drive

Speaking of sex, a vasectomy has no impact on your sex drive or testosterone level. You still produce sperm. The only difference is it doesn’t mix with semen for ejaculation.

  1. You’ll Make Her Happy

Ultimately, this is less about your balls and more about having the balls to take one for the team. Your wife’s body has been through plenty with childbirth, and tubal ligation is more complex and risky than a vasectomy. Do it for her. Do it for her. That’s right: Do it for her.

There you have it. Plenty of reasons for you to stop procrastinating and get that vasectomy. You have the information, and now it’s time to talk with your wife and set the appointment.
